Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro has launched the Gacahru Mchungucha Irrigation Water Project, a significant initiative set to benefit over 2,000 farmers in the area.

The project, undertaken by the Tana and Athi Rivers Development Authority, aims to enhance agricultural productivity by reducing the dependency on rain-fed farming.

During the launch, MP Ndindi Nyoro highlighted the project’s potential to transform local agriculture. “This irrigation project will greatly enhance our agricultural productivity. We anticipate increased yields for all crops grown in this area, leading to higher profits for our farmers as they can fetch better prices for their produce,” he said.

The Gacharu Mchungucha Irrigation Water Project, costing Ksh 300 million, is already underway with the Tana and Athi Rivers Development Authority diligently working on the ground. “I am happy to see this project taking off today. The Authority is doing a commendable job,” Nyoro added.

In addition to the irrigation project, the MP announced the construction of a tarmac road from Kayahwe to Maragua. This road will facilitate the transportation of farm produce to the market, further boosting the local economy. “Everything we are doing is aimed at improving efficiency in our economy. The new road will help farmers get their produce to market more easily,” Nyoro stated.

The project’s chairman, Benson Irungu, provided insights into the long journey leading up to the launch. “We started this initiative in 2012, and with the support of the area MCA, we managed to secure funding. Previously, lack of rainfall led to hunger, but now with this irrigation system, over 2,000 farmers will have access to water, ensuring better yields and improved livelihoods.”

Bernard Ruiro, MCA for the area, acknowledged MP Nyoro’s contributions to the project. “This irrigation project will allow parents to better support their families and afford school fees for their children. The new road will also enable farmers to transport their produce to the market efficiently.”

Terry Abdub, the project contractor, emphasized the project’s alignment with food security goals. “This project is a key pillar under food security. We are happy to launch this community-initiated program, and we are committed to helping the community implement it successfully.”

The Gacahru Mchungucha Irrigation Water Project and the accompanying infrastructure developments signify a major leap forward for Kiharu’s agricultural sector, promising enhanced productivity, improved livelihoods, and a stronger local economy.
