Opposition Officials Warn Against Joining the Government Amidst Cabinet Dismissal

Recent political developments have sparked speculation about the future role of the Azimio coalition in Kenya’s government. Following President William Ruto’s cabinet reshuffle and his unexpected overture to Azimio leader Raila Odinga, there is growing speculation that the opposition might be included in the new administration. However, experts are cautioning against this potential alliance.

Communication expert Hesbon Owilla warns that joining the government could undermine the opposition’s standing with the public. “This government has already failed Kenyans,” Owilla stated. “If ODM aligns itself with this administration, it risks losing its popularity and the opportunity to lead a more effective opposition in the 2027 elections.”

Political analyst Joseph Kamanya echoed similar sentiments, arguing that Raila Odinga should resist any temptation to join the government. “Raila Odinga’s most effective role is to remain in the opposition,” Kamanya said. “His party, ODM, played a crucial role in opposing the Finance Bill 2024 and shedding light on the shortcomings of over 200 MPs who supported it.”

As the political landscape shifts, the future of the Azimio coalition remains uncertain. Will Raila Odinga and his party heed the warnings of experts, or will they seek a place within the new government structure? Only time will tell how these developments will shape Kenya’s political future.
