Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich today lauded President William Samoei Ruto for his pivotal role in advancing environmental conservation and local development initiatives during his recent visit to the region.

President Ruto presided over the tree planting event at the Kaptagat Forest Ecosystem in Kaptarakwa Ward, a significant step in the county’s ambitious goal of planting 60 million trees over the next decade. This initiative reflects Governor Rotich’s commitment to ecological restoration as a key element of his administration’s environmental agenda.

In his remarks, Governor Rotich expressed deep appreciation for the efforts of Treasury PS Dr. Chris Kiptoo, who has been instrumental in championing the restoration of Kaptagat Forest. The Governor emphasized that these conservation efforts are aligned with the broader environmental and economic strategies of his administration.

“Today’s event marks a significant milestone in our mission to restore our ecosystems and promote sustainable development,” said Governor Rotich. “Our goal to plant 60 million trees in ten years is a testament to our dedication to environmental stewardship and the future of our county.”

During the visit, President Ruto also commissioned the Yokot Multipurpose Dam and launched the construction and desilting of the Etio Dams in Kamariny Ward. These projects are set to benefit over 12,000 farmers by enhancing irrigation opportunities and bolstering agricultural productivity in the region.

In addition to the environmental and agricultural initiatives, President Ruto visited Kipsoen Technical and Vocational College, where the institution was equipped with new computers under the Jitume Program. The President’s visit also included a tour of other vocational training centers, including Chepsirei TTI in Keiyo South, Kapcherop TTI in Marakwet West, and Kerio Valley TTI in Marakwet East, all of which will benefit from new resources and support for their educational programs.

The event was attended by Deputy President H.E. Rigathi Gachagua, Prime Cabinet Secretary Hon Musalia Mudavadi, Governor Jonathan Bii of Uasin Gishu, and a host of Principal Secretaries, MPs, MCAs, CECs, and County staff.

Governor Rotich concluded his address by reaffirming his administration’s commitment to both environmental sustainability and economic development as the cornerstones of his governance.

“Our collective efforts are shaping a brighter future for Elgeyo Marakwet County,” he said. “I am grateful for the support of President Ruto and all the leaders present today as we continue to work towards our vision of a thriving and resilient community.”
