Rift Widens in Azimio Coalition as Kalonzo Musyoka Declares Opposition to Government of National Unity

The Azimio Coalition is experiencing significant internal strife as plans for a Government of National Unity come into sharper focus. Kalonzo Musyoka, a leading figure in the coalition and the leader of Wiper Party, has publicly declared that his faction will not be participating in the proposed broad-based government spearheaded by President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration.

In a recent statement, Musyoka made it clear that the factions within Azimio will not endorse any of their members who choose to join the Kenya Kwanza-led government. He emphasized that any such decision would be made in an individual capacity and not as a representative of Azimio.

“Should any of our members opt to join the proposed Kenya Kwanza-led broad-based Government of National Unity, we shall not be party to that decision,” Musyoka asserted. “They will actually be joining in their individual capacities, and not on behalf of Azimio.”

Musyoka’s remarks come amid ongoing discussions about forming a more inclusive government, a move which he argues is fundamentally flawed under the current Kenya Kwanza regime. He voiced his strong opposition to the idea, suggesting that it would be nothing more than a superficial adjustment rather than a genuine reform.

“As long as the Kenya Kwanza regime is in place, absolutely nothing will change. A cabinet reorganization and change of office holders will only be cosmetic unless that new cabinet comes into being after a proper convention, not mere dialogue,” Musyoka contended.

The statement underscores a deepening divide within Azimio, highlighting the challenges the coalition faces as it navigates its future strategy and position in Kenya’s political landscape. This development also raises questions about the potential effectiveness and legitimacy of the proposed Government of National Unity, which aims to bring together disparate political forces for the betterment of the country.
