Opposition Leaders Criticize President Ruto’s Cabinet Appointments Ahead of Planned Protests

Opposition leaders from Nyanza region have sharply criticized President William Ruto’s recent decision to reappoint six former Cabinet Secretaries, calling the move a setback for the country’s progress and a betrayal of the youth’s aspirations. Their disapproval comes ahead of planned protests on Tuesday aimed at demonstrating against the Cabinet reshuffle.

David Ochieng, the Ugenya legislator, voiced strong objections to the president’s decision, questioning the rationale behind re-nominating the same individuals who had previously been dismissed. Ochieng contended that President Ruto’s actions contradict his earlier assertions that these officials had failed in their duties.

“The president cannot dismiss his Cabinet and then reinstate them just two weeks later,” Ochieng argued. “If they were inadequate for the role before, what has changed in such a short time to justify their return? This move does not reflect a commitment to improving governance but rather a reluctance to make meaningful changes.”

Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka also expressed his dissatisfaction with the Cabinet appointments. Onyonka criticized the president for failing to appoint new, highly qualified individuals who could drive the country’s development forward.

“Why is the president sticking with individuals whose track records are already well known?” Onyonka asked. “The president had an opportunity to bring in fresh talent and offer the youth a chance to serve the nation, but instead, he chose to recycle old faces. This decision falls short of the transformative leadership that the country needs.”

President Ruto’s recent Cabinet reshuffle saw the return of several prominent figures. Kithure Kindiki, Aden Duale, and Soiypan Tuya were reinstated to the ministries they previously led, while David Chirchir was appointed as the new Minister of Roads and Transport, and Rebecca Miano was nominated to replace Justin Muturi as Minister of Trade and Industry.

The opposition’s criticism highlights a growing sentiment that President Ruto’s Cabinet choices may not reflect the urgent need for reform and renewal in Kenyan politics. As protests loom, the debate over the president’s leadership decisions is set to intensify.
