Local Artisan Henry Kariuki Transforms Waste into Wealth in Embu County
In Mutunduri, Embu County, Henry Kariuki of Kanegene Arts has emerged as a beacon of innovation and sustainability. Starting his journey in 1998, Kariuki initially focused on crafting viondos and repairing shoes. However, his pursuit of new skills led him to significant growth and diversification in his business.
In 2013, Kariuki seized an opportunity to enhance his expertise by attending a training on waste management and organic farming at Tenri. This training inspired him to venture into producing briquettes from waste materials. His commitment to learning and growth continued to pay off.
The turning point came in 2015 when Kariuki, supported by the County Enterprise Development Officer from the Micro and Small Enterprises Authority (MSEA) and the Embu County government, participated in the Uganda EAC Trade Fair. There, he learned valuable skills from other small and medium enterprises (MSEs) in Uganda, including the art of creating products from banana fibers.
Today, Henry Kariuki’s business has significantly diversified. He now crafts items from banana fibers, including caps and balls, and repurposes recycled materials into functional art. His creations range from tables, seats, and pots made from recycled tires to vibrant flowers from recycled plastics, and even unique earrings fashioned from bullhorns.
Kariuki’s participation in various local trade fairs, exhibitions, and EAC trade fairs, facilitated by MSEA, the Embu County government, and other stakeholders, has been instrumental in his success. These platforms have not only provided him with crucial learning opportunities but have also enhanced his visibility and market reach. As a result, Kariuki has seen a surge in clients, referrals, and repeat customers.
Through his innovative approach and dedication, Henry Kariuki has not only transformed waste into valuable products but also set a remarkable example of entrepreneurial success and sustainability in Embu County.
