This morning, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Director General Dr. Erustus Kanga and WWF Kenya CEO Mr. Mohamed Awer inaugurated a state-of-the-art security operation command center at Solio Game Reserve.

The new facility, equipped with Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) thermal cameras installed by WWF Kenya with support from Ol Pejeta Conservancy, aims to enhance round-the-clock security for the reserve, particularly benefiting its rhino population.

The advanced thermal camera technology will enable real-time monitoring and improve response capabilities against poaching and other threats, reinforcing efforts to protect one of the world’s most endangered species.

Later in the day, Dr. Kanga participated in World Ranger Day celebrations at Nanyuki Stadium, honoring the courageous individuals who dedicate their lives to wildlife conservation. In his address, Dr. Kanga highlighted the essential role of rangers in safeguarding natural and cultural resources and acknowledged the often-overlooked dangers they face.

World Ranger Day serves as a global recognition of the vital work carried out by rangers and a tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Dr. Kanga underscored the growing importance of the day, noting its role in drawing attention to the rangers’ significant contributions to conservation.

Rangers, who are on the frontline of wildlife protection, handle a range of responsibilities including law enforcement, combating poaching, managing wildfires, conducting conservation education, monitoring ecosystems, responding to emergencies, and carrying out challenging rescue missions.

Dr. Kanga praised the rangers for their exemplary performance and strong response to KWS’s conservation campaign, “Tunza Mali Yako,” which emphasizes the importance of nurturing and protecting Kenya’s natural heritage. He commended rangers across all conservation areas for their dedication and assured them of continued recognition and support both within the service and on a global scale.
