Health CS Nominee Vows to Tackle Corruption in Health Sector
As the vetting of nominated cabinet secretaries commenced today, Dr. Deborah Baraza, the nominee for the Health portfolio, pledged a vigorous stance against corruption in the sector. Her commitment came during her vetting session, following her nomination by President William Ruto.
Dr. Baraza began her statement by expressing gratitude to President Ruto for the opportunity and acknowledging the pervasive issue of corruption within the health sector. She proposed that digital platforms could play a crucial role in combating this issue by reducing direct human interactions, which often facilitate corrupt practices.
“My opinion is that we need to streamline existing processes and one effective way is through digital platforms, which can significantly minimize human-to-human contact,” Dr. Baraza said.
In addition to digital solutions, Dr. Baraza emphasized the importance of rigorous monitoring and regular meetings to address challenges in the health sector. She also highlighted the necessity of collaboration with anti-corruption agencies to tackle the pervasive issue.
“We need to implement an accountability and visibility framework and work closely with various commissions to address corruption effectively,” Baraza added.
Should she be approved by the National Assembly, Dr. Baraza will succeed Susan Nakhumicha as the Health Cabinet Secretary. Nakhumicha’s tenure was marked by significant controversies, including her dismissal from the cabinet, which underscores the challenges faced by her successor.
Dr. Baraza’s approach marks a renewed effort to address long-standing issues in the health sector, aiming for a more transparent and accountable system.
