President Ruto Highlights New Education Funding Model at KICC Townhall
President William Ruto emphasized the critical role of education in shaping Kenya’s future during a townhall meeting at the Kenyatta International Conference Center (KICC) on Friday. Speaking to a diverse audience of lecturers, students, and education stakeholders, Ruto underscored the government’s commitment to improving the education sector amid ongoing debates about the new funding model.
Addressing the crowd, President Ruto stressed that the quality of education is paramount for national progress. “To destroy a nation, you don’t need to use an atomic bomb or long-range missiles. All you need to do is lower the quality of education. Exam cheating and diminished standards equate to the destruction of a nation,” he warned.
Ruto outlined the government’s substantial investment in education, noting that nearly 29% of the national budget is allocated to this sector. He also recounted his administration’s efforts to address challenges within the education system, including the financial difficulties faced by public universities.
“When I assumed office, 23 out of our 40 public universities were struggling financially,” Ruto revealed. “To tackle these issues, I appointed a 42-person task force specifically tasked with reforming our education sector.”
The president’s remarks come as part of a broader initiative to address concerns about the new education funding model, aiming to enhance the quality of education while ensuring financial sustainability for academic institutions.
