In a surprising display of political unity, Kenyan Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has endorsed Raila Odinga for the position of African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson. Speaking today at a State House event in Nairobi, Gachagua, alongside President William Ruto and several African leaders, publicly congratulated Odinga on his nomination.

Gachagua, known for his previous political rivalry with Odinga, used the occasion to clarify the nature of their past differences. He emphasized that their disagreements were purely political, stemming from their competition for Kenya’s top position. Now that Odinga is vying for a continental role, Gachagua affirmed Kenya’s support for him.

“As a truthful man, I had nothing against him. It’s only that we were competing for the same position between him and my boss. But now that he is going for a bigger seat in Africa, all of us and the rest of Kenya are behind him,” Gachagua stated.

The Deputy President expressed confidence in Odinga’s ability to elevate Africa on the global stage. “As we present Raila Odinga to be our candidate, it is because Africa, our motherland, deserves the best. The passion and zeal in Raila Odinga in Pan-Africanism is well documented. Passion knows no age, no limit,” he said.

Odinga’s nomination for the AUC Chairperson is seen as a significant moment for Kenyan diplomacy and Pan-African solidarity.
