Ugandan President’s Comments on Kenyan MP Draw Criticism from Kenyan Leaders

Kenyan leaders have strongly condemned recent remarks made by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni about Dr. Babu Owino, the Member of Parliament for Embakasi East. Museveni’s comments, made during a public address, criticized Owino for his support of Ugandan opposition figures and alleged interference in Ugandan politics.

During a launch event at State House Nairobi for Raila Odinga’s AUC chairmanship bid, Museveni accused Owino of being involved in activities that undermine his regime. Museveni claimed that Owino’s actions have been flagged in multiple intelligence reports as part of a broader effort to destabilize his government.

In response, Dr. Babu Owino defended his position, emphasizing that his commitment is to a democratic Africa where all children, whether in Kenya or Uganda, have access to quality education, healthcare, and employment opportunities. “My fight is for the liberation of Africa. Uganda is not an exception. Every child deserves the same rights and opportunities,” Owino asserted.

Edwin Sifuna, the Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), criticized Museveni’s approach, urging him to address diplomatic matters through appropriate channels rather than using public platforms to attack Kenyan leaders. “Whatever grievances Museveni has with Babu Owino, the manner of his attack is inappropriate and unwarranted. Kenya is a nation governed by law, and such matters should be handled diplomatically,” Sifuna stated.

The situation highlights ongoing tensions and underscores the complexities of regional politics as leaders navigate diplomatic relations and national interests.
