Makueni Senator Warns Ruto of Political Fallout if Odinga Fails in AU Chair Bid

Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo has issued a stark warning to President William Ruto, emphasizing that Ruto could face severe backlash from his supporters if Raila Odinga does not secure the position of African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson.

Maanzo stressed that Ruto must lead the charge in lobbying African Heads of State to support Odinga’s candidacy. The senator underscored the importance of Ruto’s involvement in rallying votes for the long-time opposition leader, who is vying for the role at the AUC headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Odinga’s bid requires substantial backing from both Anglophone and Francophone-speaking countries, which together constitute two-thirds of the AU’s member states. To win, Odinga must secure at least two-thirds of the votes, equating to a minimum of 32 out of the 55 member states.

With the current AUC chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, set to step down in 2025, the upcoming election represents a crucial opportunity for Odinga, and Maanzo’s comments highlight the high stakes involved for both Ruto and Odinga.
