A section of Muslim leaders in the north rift has expressed their support to Chief Justice Martha Koome and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula’s proposal to merge bursaries into one kitty.
Led by Sheikh Abubakar Bini, the chairman of the Council Of Imams And Preachers of Kenya (CIPK), the leaders said the funds allocated for education should follow proper channels to ensure they are not misused by leaders but reach needy students.
“When those funds are pooled into one account and used in one system, every student will receive a better education,” Sheikh Bini said.
He further stated that in addition to government-funded scholarship, parents should also increase their contribution to their children’s education and not solely rely on the government.
“Parents should also see the importance of education. It shouldn’t always be about everything being free. Its good to contribute a little. The economy is indeed tough but let’s support the government so our children can get education” he said.
There has been a debate over the need to put together resources used to finance education through various bursaries.
According to CJ Koome, all bursaries should be abolished and a consolidated kitty set up to ensure free education to all.
Similar sentiments were shared by Wetangula who exporessed the need for a policy to be established to address the matter.
Currently, there are various types of bursaries allocated to students across the country.
The bursaries are separaly allocated by county governments, Members of the National Assemmbly, County Women MPs and the Ministry of Education.
“We have MCAs,MPs,Women representatives,Governors,HELB loans, the university fund, presidential bursaries and private institutions offering bursaries.
