One year since the introduction of the Competency Based Education and Training (CBET) curricula in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector, more than 100,000 trainees have enrolled in various institutions. This marks a significant milestone in Kenya’s efforts to align its education system with industry demands.

Speaking this morning after a meeting with TVET Heads of Departments and State Agencies in her office, Principal Secretary for TVET, Dr. Esther Muoria, highlighted the steady progress of CBET implementation. “Competency-Based training is steadily taking shape in the country. We have seen an encouraging response from both trainees and institutions,” she noted.

During the meeting, Dr. Muoria received a detailed status report on the implementation of the CBET curricula. The report outlined key achievements, challenges, and ongoing strategies aimed at ensuring the success of the program.

“At the State Department for TVET, we are determined to supply our economy with industry-ready, skilled youth. Our priority is to ensure that our graduates possess the hands-on skills and competencies that the job market demands,” Dr. Muoria emphasized.

CBET focuses on equipping learners with practical skills, placing emphasis on their ability to perform specific tasks competently rather than solely on academic theory. It has been lauded as a forward-thinking approach that aligns well with Kenya’s Vision 2030 development agenda and the global shift toward skills-based education.

As the country continues to embrace this new system, the PS reaffirmed her department’s commitment to addressing any challenges and ensuring that the curriculum produces a skilled workforce capable of driving economic growth.
