Moi University Students Riot Amid Prolonged Lecturers’ Strike
Moi University was plunged into chaos on Thursday as students rioted in response to the indefinite closure of the institution due to an ongoing lecturers’ strike and escalating unrest.
The university administration announced the closure following a special meeting of the University Senate, which resolved to suspend all teaching and learning activities for the first semester of the 2024/2025 academic year.
In an official memo, Vice Chancellor Isaac Kosgey stated that the decision was made in the interest of student safety and institutional stability. However, the announcement sparked anger among students, who have been unable to attend classes since the semester began.
Witnesses reported that police deployed teargas canisters to disperse the angry crowds, as students expressed their frustration over the situation. Many students accused the administration of failing to address their concerns, demanding the resignation of Vice Chancellor Kosgey for what they called a lack of leadership.
University Secretary General Cornelius Kiplimo lamented the disruption, stating, “It is sad that students have not learned since the semester started. This closure is a regrettable outcome.”
As tensions remain high, the future of the academic year hangs in the balance, with students calling for immediate action to resolve the ongoing strike and restore normalcy to the university.
