In a significant boost to maritime safety, five search and rescue boats were officially handed over to the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) today in a ceremony held in Nyali, Mombasa. The donation, facilitated by the Go Blue Kenya project and presented by the European Union Ambassadors to Kenya, aims to improve the safety and security of fishermen operating along the coast.

The new boats will enhance the coordination of search and rescue efforts across five coastal counties: Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River, and Lamu. This initiative is part of a broader commitment to protect the livelihoods of local fishermen and ensure their safety at sea.

During the ceremony, Governor Issa Timamy of Lamu, who also chairs the Blue Economy Committee of the Council of Governors, emphasized the importance of the boats in safeguarding lives. “This donation represents a crucial step in ensuring that our fishermen can operate with confidence, knowing that help is readily available should they encounter difficulties at sea,” he stated.

The Go Blue Kenya project, which focuses on sustainable ocean management and supporting local fishing communities, has played a pivotal role in the enhancement of maritime safety protocols. The donation of these boats is expected to facilitate better response times and improve overall safety for fishermen across the region.

Local fishermen expressed gratitude for the support, highlighting how the boats will help mitigate risks associated with their profession, especially during adverse weather conditions.

As the region continues to navigate challenges in the fishing industry, the new search and rescue boats stand as a testament to collaborative efforts aimed at protecting both the livelihoods and lives of those who depend on the sea.
