Dr. Philip K. Kirwa, the Chief Executive Officer of Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), is at the forefront of transforming healthcare in the region. With over 28 years of experience in medicine and reproductive health, Dr. Kirwa has dedicated his career to enhancing healthcare services not only for Kenyans but also for the broader East African population, which he serves through MTRH—a level 6B National/International teaching and referral hospital.

Under Dr. Kirwa’s leadership, MTRH has witnessed significant advancements, including the expansion of specialized services such as cochlear implantation, kidney transplants, open-heart surgeries, and corneal transplants. The hospital, which serves a population of approximately 25 million people across Kenya and neighboring countries, has seen a marked increase in patient numbers and the complexity of cases handled, along with a growth in specialized human resources.

Dr. Kirwa, a Fellow of the College of Obstetrics and Gynecology of East, Central, and Southern Africa (FCOG-ECSA), has previously held several key positions, including Chief Medical Specialist, Medical Director of Private Wings, and Director of Reproductive Health. His extensive background in medical practice and administration has equipped him with the expertise necessary to lead MTRH effectively.

A vital aspect of Dr. Kirwa’s leadership has been the collaboration with the AMPATH partnership, which has facilitated fundraising, construction, and the successful implementation of various capital projects at MTRH. Notable developments include the Riley Mother & Baby Hospital, Majaliwa Surgery Theatres, the Chandaria Cancer & Chronic Diseases Centre, and the upcoming burn unit and neurodevelopmental center. These initiatives aim to improve healthcare access and outcomes for both Kenyans and East Africans.

Dr. Kirwa recognizes the importance of ongoing training and development for healthcare professionals, with MTRH hosting various programs, including Higher National Diplomas in Clinical Medicine & Nursing and the Women in Leadership Program. He aims to enhance MTRH’s collaborative efforts to provide excellent healthcare, training, and research, with a focus on establishing a new Multi-Specialty MTRH.

The AMPATH partnership is pivotal in supporting Dr. Kirwa’s vision for MTRH. It strengthens community engagement through clinical outreach and medical camps, significantly improving health outcomes in the region. The partnership has also influenced national health policies in Kenya and has provided training opportunities to advance human resources for health.

Looking to the future, Dr. Kirwa emphasizes that the upcoming facilities at MTRH will enhance services available to the local population, reducing the need for patients to seek care abroad and improving waiting times for quality healthcare.

“What makes the AMPATH partnership special is its ability to unite diverse partners under one umbrella, providing collaborative solutions to local challenges,” Dr. Kirwa stated. “It addresses areas such as cancer, cardiology, maternal health, and chronic diseases, all while reducing the cost of healthcare delivery.”

As he steers MTRH towards new heights, Dr. Kirwa expresses pride in leveraging collaborations like AMPATH to impact the lives of many. His commitment to advancing healthcare in Kenya reflects a deep-seated belief that healthcare is a right for all, ensuring that MTRH continues to be a beacon of hope and healing in the region.
