Bishop Kieru Advocates for Church Self-Regulation Amidst Calls for Greater Freedom of Worship
Apostolic Bishop Dr. Simon Kieru of the Kenya Assemblies of God Nyahururu District has voiced strong support for President William Ruto’s call for the church to self-regulate, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the freedom of worship as a constitutional right.
During a recent address at the AIC Milimani, President Ruto affirmed the government’s commitment not to interfere with religious practices, highlighting the church’s integral role in Kenyan society. In response, Bishop Dr. Kieru expressed his agreement, stating that the church is essential for promoting democracy, respecting human rights, and advocating for good governance.
“The Church in Kenya has a vital responsibility in fostering accountability and calling out corruption,” Bishop Kieru said. He believes that through their established umbrella bodies, churches can effectively manage their own affairs and address any misconduct within their ranks. “Self-regulation will help us eliminate the few wayward elements that tarnish the image of the broader church community,” he added.
Bishop Kieru’s comments come at a time when the relationship between religious organizations and the state is under scrutiny. His advocacy for self-regulation aligns with a growing sentiment among church leaders who seek to maintain autonomy while ensuring that their institutions uphold ethical standards.
As the conversation around religious freedom and governance continues, Bishop Kieru’s perspective highlights the potential for churches to play a proactive role in shaping a more transparent and accountable society.
