In just one month since her appointment, Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano has initiated a remarkable turnaround in Kenya’s wildlife and tourism sector, earning widespread praise for her proactive measures.

Upon assuming the role, Miano was met with immediate challenges, notably the hyena menace that had been terrorizing residents in Juja. Swift action led to the deployment of a specialized team from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), effectively resolving the issue and restoring peace to the community.

During her inaugural address, Miano emphasized the importance of innovation and creativity, stating, “The primacy of imagination is way more potent than the pursuit of mere routine… Together, I am confident that we can recreate the tourism and wildlife sector and make Kenya the Shangri-La of Africa.”

Miano’s commitment to revitalizing the industry was highlighted during the recent World Tourism Week, where she facilitated free access to all game parks, encouraging Kenyans to explore their national treasures. Additionally, she launched nine regional tourism circuits designed to attract both local and international visitors, focusing on adventure, culture, eco-tourism, and wellness.

In her efforts to protect endangered species, Miano announced significant strides toward saving the Northern white rhino through in-vitro fertilization (IVF) technology. Speaking at World Rhino Day celebrations in Samburu, she highlighted the collaborative efforts of Kenyan scientists and global partners in this crucial initiative.

Furthermore, she spearheaded the successful translocation of approximately 50 elephants from Mwea National Reserve to Aberdare National Park, underscoring KWS’s dedication to improving human-wildlife coexistence and addressing environmental concerns.

Miano is fostering collaboration among the various agencies under her ministry, with many now developing strategic plans aimed at achieving the ambitious target of welcoming 2.5 million tourists by the end of the year, the highest in Kenya’s history.

With her dynamic leadership and innovative vision, Rebecca Miano is poised to reshape Kenya’s tourism landscape, ensuring that the country remains a premier destination for travelers worldwide.
