Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) marked World Mental Health Day on October 10, focusing on the critical theme of workplace mental health. This year’s observance highlighted the importance of supporting the mental wellness of hospital staff through initiatives such as the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP).

Dr. Florence Jaguga, the Acting Director of Mental Health and Rehabilitative Services at MTRH, emphasized that mental health is integral to overall well-being. “There is no health without mental health. Every person breathing is vulnerable to mental health issues,” she stated, pointing out the pervasive nature of mental health challenges across all demographics.

Mental health professionals at the event underscored the concerning rise in mental health cases, particularly among younger populations. Research indicates that individuals aged 15 to 24 are especially at risk, with Dr. Jaguga noting that **1 in 4 people experience mental illness**. This statistic underscores the urgent need for comprehensive mental health strategies in various sectors, including workplaces.

The theme of this year’s observance, “Mental Health in the Workplace,” resonated deeply with MTRH’s initiatives. The EAP is designed to help staff navigate social and emotional challenges, fostering a safer and more supportive work environment. “We want to ensure that we create a safe workplace and also provide an opportune space to implement mental health interventions,” Dr. Jaguga affirmed, highlighting the hospital’s commitment to prioritizing employee mental wellness.

In support of these efforts, the Ministry of Health has introduced extensive guidelines for workplace mental health interventions. These guidelines serve as a framework for organizations to develop programs that promote mental health and enhance productivity.

As mental health challenges continue to escalate globally, MTRH is dedicated to equipping its staff with the necessary resources and support. By prioritizing mental health in the workplace, the hospital aims to foster a healthier, more supportive working environment, aligning with the World Health Organization’s vision for enhanced mental health awareness and care.
