My name is Christopher Macharia. I celebrated my 26th birthday a fortnight ago and am currently a homeowner and self-made entrepreneur. We live life in stages, but some stages are shorter than others. Only last year, I had nothing. I was a street beggar, with no belongings or permanent residence.

I wore the same clothes from Monday to Monday. Sleeping hungry was the order of the day, sometimes going for days without any meal. How I survived those days, I still don’t know. I had no future, and my chances of seeing tomorrow were always slim.

My only other source of income, other than begging along Uhuru Highway for people in cars to give me coins, was carrying loads of cargo at the market for a meager income. There was intense competition for that too, as many jobless youths would show up as early as 3 a.m. to earn something before the sun rose.

As difficult as getting by was, I never gave up. I dreamt that one day, I would beat poverty a decisive punch and make it. My first breakthrough came when, along Uhuru Highway, a lady saw me huddled under a tree, unsure of what to do after a rather lengthy off-peak season at begging.
