Tensions Rise in Kenya Following Deputy President Gachagua’s Controversial Remarks
In a press statement today, human rights activists have condemned recent statements made by outgoing Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, describing them as inflammatory and potentially dangerous.
Activist Kipkorir Ngetich emphasized that the comments, which allege a state-sponsored attempt on Gachagua’s life, could incite violence and ethnic clashes in a country still grappling with the scars of past conflicts.
Ngetich expressed concern over the timing of Gachagua’s remarks, particularly following his impeachment. He stated, “Such allegations, if unchecked, can fuel animosity between the Kikuyu and Kalenjin communities.” He urged that no individual should be permitted to make incendiary statements, warning that the repercussions could destabilize the country.
The activists called for the Inspector General of Police to provide assurances regarding Gachagua’s safety, given his high-profile status and extensive security arrangements. They also demanded an urgent parliamentary inquiry into Gachagua’s claims, insisting that he must present evidence to substantiate his allegations. Ngetich stressed that if Gachagua is found to be politicizing the country’s security, he should face legal consequences.
The activists further urged leaders from the Kikuyu community to refrain from inciting division among the diverse Kenyan population. “Kenya is home to over 42 tribes, and no single community holds superiority over another,” Ngetich noted.
As tensions mount, the activists called for a peaceful response from the youth of Central Kenya and the Rift Valley, emphasizing the importance of unity and dialogue over discord. They urged all political figures to recognize their responsibility in safeguarding national stability and to avoid exploiting sensitive issues for political gain.
The situation remains volatile, with calls for immediate investigations into hate speech and inflammatory rhetoric. The activists reiterated the need for a cohesive society where fundamental rights are respected and protected, ensuring that Kenya continues on a path toward peace and harmony.
