A planned parallel Mashujaa Day celebration at Uhuru Park turned chaotic on Friday as police intervened, using tear gas to disperse crowds and arresting several participants, including prominent activist and comedian Eric Omondi. The gathering aimed to honor the lives of over 61 young individuals lost during recent protests, sparking outrage and calls for justice.

Activists, led by figures such as Nerima Wako and Boniface Mwangi, expressed their frustration over what they termed the government’s indifference to youth issues. Wako criticized authorities, stating, “This government continues to act as if they do not know that young people exist.” Meanwhile, Mwangi recounted distressing encounters, including being chased away with his family and witnessing ongoing police violence.

Christian Wafula, another activist, emphasized the event’s importance, describing it as a moment of remembrance for those who fought for justice. The group condemned the police’s heavy-handed tactics, asserting that Uhuru Park is a public space intended for peaceful assembly.

Despite warnings from the Nairobi County government regarding event reservations, Wako insisted that the families of the deceased deserve acknowledgment and support from lawmakers. The activists also voiced their discontent over the recent nomination of Kithure Kindiki as deputy president, demanding accountability for the violence that has marred peaceful protests.

The day’s events reflect a broader movement for justice and recognition of the struggles faced by Kenyan youth, as many continue to seek answers regarding the fatalities resulting from clashes with police. The situation remains tense as the community rallies for accountability and support.
