Principal Secretary for Mining Elijah Mwangi emphasized the importance of stakeholder consultation to resolve disputes that could impede growth in the mining sector. Speaking at a consultative forum today, Mwangi gathered leaders from Kwale County, including Kaya Elders and officials from the Kwale Mining Alliance, to discuss community representation in the Post-Mine Land Use (PMLU) Committee for the Base Titanium mining project.

Present at the forum were local MPs Hon. Feisal Abdallah Bader (Msambweni), Hon. Kassim Sawa Tandaza (Matuga), and Hon. Mangale Munga Chiforomo (Lungalunga), alongside several MCAs, including Hanifa Badi from Mwajirani Ward. The discussions centered on ensuring that community interests are prioritized as the mining project approaches its closure in December 2024, following the depletion of its mineral resources.

The PMLU Committee was established to create a framework for the distribution of assets and to ensure that the community’s best interests are upheld. Despite its diverse membership drawn from various government agencies and elected representatives, calls have emerged for broader representation to include more interested parties and community groups.

Mwangi reiterated the government’s commitment to community involvement in all public projects, stressing that transparency and inclusivity are vital. The department plans to evaluate the proposals discussed at the forum to enhance the committee’s effectiveness in fulfilling its mandate.

The collaborative efforts between the government, civil society organizations, and local elders reflect a collective desire to ensure that the transition following Base Titanium’s operations is managed in a way that benefits the local community.
