Engineers Set to Drive Economic Transformation at 31st International Convention in Mombasa
The Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) has announced its 31st International Convention, scheduled for October 29 to November 1, 2024, at the PrideInn Paradise Beach Resort and Spa in Mombasa. The convention, themed “Industrialization for Economic Transformation and Employment Creation,” aims to unite engineers, policymakers, and industry leaders to discuss the role of industrialization in Kenya’s economic growth.
Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation, Eng. Eric Mugaa, underscored the essential role engineers play in national development. “Innovation is not just an option; it is a necessity in our fast-changing world,” he remarked, emphasizing the government’s commitment to improving critical infrastructure.
Eng. Shammah Kiteme, President of IEK, echoed these sentiments, calling the convention a vital platform for addressing the challenges facing Kenya’s industrial sector. He highlighted the need to increase manufacturing’s contribution to GDP from the current 7.7% towards the Vision 2030 target of 15%. “We must shift from being net importers to net exporters,” he asserted.
The event is expected to attract over 3,000 delegates, both in-person and virtually, focusing on networking, knowledge sharing, and showcasing innovations in engineering. Eng. Erastus K. Mwongera, Chairman of the Engineers Board of Kenya, noted the country’s alignment with global engineering standards and highlighted initiatives like the Graduate Engineers Internship Program, which has successfully integrated over 700 graduates into professional roles.
The convention is poised to reinforce the importance of engineering in shaping Kenya’s economic landscape and advancing its industrial capabilities, further establishing IEK as a leader in promoting engineering excellence for national development.
