President William Ruto officially inaugurated the Tenwek Mission Hospital Cardiothoracic Centre on October 24, 2024, marking a significant milestone in enhancing healthcare services in Kenya. This ultra-modern facility is expected to transform specialist care, particularly in cardiothoracic surgery, reducing the need for costly overseas treatments.

During the launch, Ruto emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC), a key component of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda. “This facility is a well-come and major milestone in Kenya’s journey to efficient, high-quality, accessible health care,” he stated.

The establishment of the new Social Health Authority (SHA) will facilitate access to specialized services, including those provided at the Cardiothoracic Centre. Ruto noted that millions of Kenyans will benefit from world-class care without the burden of high costs, aligning with the government’s goal for universal healthcare.

Founded in 1937, Tenwek Mission Hospital has evolved from a small clinic to a 400-bed modern facility. The new Cardiothoracic Centre will enable the hospital to offer advanced surgeries, significantly enhancing its capacity to serve the community.

Ruto acknowledged the pivotal role of faith-based organizations like Tenwek in revolutionizing healthcare in Kenya. He highlighted their inclusive approach and urged for continued partnerships to achieve UHC.

The President also outlined recent government reforms aimed at improving health financing and digitalization through legislation such as the Social Health Assurance Act and the Digital Health Act. These reforms will ensure free primary healthcare services across dispensaries and selected hospitals in the country.

“Under the Social Health Authority, specialized services such as cardiothoracic surgeries will be covered at this new centre, setting global standards,” Ruto added. He called for increased public-private partnerships to bolster health infrastructure and services, particularly as cardiovascular diseases account for 25% of hospital admissions in Kenya.

With an investment of Sh4.5 billion, the Cardiothoracic Centre stands as a testament to investor confidence in the healthcare sector. Ruto expressed gratitude to the Tenwek community and partners, including the Africa Gospel Church and Samaritan’s Purse, for their collaboration in making the facility a reality.

This development promises to enhance the quality of healthcare services in Kenya, reinforcing the government’s commitment to providing accessible and affordable health solutions for all Kenyans.
