Members of the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) and the Kenya Young Parliamentary Association (KYPA) today hosted a delegation of legislators, political leaders, and civil society representatives from Mozambique for a consultative session at the Parliament Buildings in Nairobi.

The discussions focused on sharing leadership experiences, insights, and best practices in promoting gender equality in both Kenya and Mozambique. KYPA Vice-Chair Robert Basil (Yatta), KEWOPA members Hon. Dorice Donya (Kisii), and Hon. Lillian Siyoi (Trans-Nzoia) led the engaging discussions alongside the Mozambican delegation, which was headed by Hon. Maria Cachite, a Member of Parliament and President of the RENAMO Party National Women’s League.

The delegation, currently on a five-day study visit to Kenya, is exploring opportunities to strengthen the leadership capacities of women and youth in political and policy-making processes. The visit aims to empower young leaders and women to influence the development of laws and policies that address gender, youth, and minority issues in their respective countries.

Speaking during the engagement, Hon. Basil highlighted the importance of inter-country collaboration in building a gender-responsive political environment, noting that such exchanges offer valuable lessons in advancing the leadership potential of underrepresented groups.

The event provided an opportunity for both Kenyan and Mozambican leaders to explore strategies for promoting gender equality, youth inclusion, and the protection of minority rights through better representation and participation in governance.

“This engagement is not only an opportunity for knowledge sharing but also a reminder of the significant role women and youth can play in shaping national development agendas,” said Hon. Donya.

Hon. Cachite, who leads a key women’s political group in Mozambique, expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and the opportunity to learn from Kenya’s progress in promoting gender equity and youth involvement in politics. She emphasized the importance of fostering strong leadership networks to drive meaningful policy change that benefits all sectors of society.

The study visit is part of an ongoing initiative to enhance the capacity of women and youth leaders in both Kenya and Mozambique to advocate for policies that improve their social, economic, and political conditions. It also serves to deepen regional cooperation on issues related to gender equality and leadership.

The delegation’s visit underscores the growing importance of cross-border dialogue in advancing gender and youth empowerment across Africa.
