Rebecca Miano, Cabinet Secretary for East African Community, Arid and Semi-Arid Lands, and Regional Development, received the prestigious **Tourism Resilience Award** at the Global Resilience Council Hall of Fame Awards held at Plaisterers’ Hall in London. Miano accepted the award on behalf of the **Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre, Eastern Africa**.
The award, presented at a glittering ceremony, recognizes the Centre’s outstanding efforts in promoting sustainability and resilience in the tourism sector amid global challenges. The Centre has been at the forefront of helping the Eastern African tourism industry navigate crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, political instability, and climate-related disruptions.
“I am deeply honored to receive this recognition on behalf of the Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre,” said Miano, addressing the esteemed audience. “This award reflects the collective efforts of our dedicated teams, partners, and stakeholders who continue to work tirelessly to ensure that Eastern Africa remains a beacon of resilient and sustainable tourism for the world.”
The Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre, based in Nairobi, Kenya, was established to provide leadership in crisis management, strengthen tourism resilience, and develop innovative strategies to tackle the ever-changing challenges facing the tourism sector. By providing training, research, and strategic frameworks, the Centre has significantly contributed to the recovery and growth of tourism in the region.
In her speech, Miano emphasized the importance of collaboration among nations and sectors to ensure the long-term sustainability of tourism. “Tourism is a powerful force for economic growth and cultural exchange, and it is essential that we protect this sector by building resilience against future crises,” she said.
The Global Resilience Council Hall of Fame Awards celebrates exceptional leaders, organizations, and initiatives that have demonstrated resilience, innovation, and dedication in various sectors globally. The Tourism Resilience Award, in particular, highlights those who have not only helped restore tourism but have also laid down frameworks for future-proofing the industry.
Miano was joined at the event by key figures from the global tourism industry, along with representatives from government, NGOs, and private enterprises. The awards ceremony provided an opportunity for the tourism community to reflect on the lessons learned from recent crises and to chart a course for a more resilient and sustainable future.
As Eastern Africa continues to recover and grow, the recognition of the Centre’s work underscores the region’s commitment to resilience and innovation in tourism, setting an example for other parts of the world facing similar challenges.
