Woman Appeals for Protection After Life-Threatening Domestic Incident, Calls for Action Against Femicide
A woman in Eldoret has made a heartfelt appeal for the return of her children and for protection from her husband, a senior officer at the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), following an alarming domestic incident in July. The woman, who has been married for seven years and is a mother of three, claims that her husband threatened her life, forcing her to flee their home and leave her children behind.
The woman recounted a terrifying encounter that occurred when her husband returned home unexpectedly one evening, around 8 p.m. He allegedly arrived without notice, and after discovering she was still at their house, demanded she leave. When she was unable to provide an explanation, he drew a pistol, pointed it at her, and threatened to kill her if she did not leave the home immediately. Fearing for her life, she complied, packing her belongings that night and leaving the house without knowing what to do next.
Since that incident, the woman has been separated from her children and has been unable to visit them. Her husband reportedly took the children to his mother’s house and has allegedly told her not to approach them, threatening death if she attempts to see her children or return to their home. Despite reporting the matter to the police, the woman claims that no substantial progress has been made on the case, leaving her feeling increasingly vulnerable.
“I have been away from my house for over five months now. I haven’t seen my children, and it’s tearing me apart. I gave birth to them, and not being able to care for them is a nightmare,” she said, her voice trembling. “I feel like my life is in danger, and I fear for my safety because my husband is an influential man. He could manipulate the system, and I’m left with no one to protect me.”
The woman also revealed that her husband has been accusing her of infidelity without evidence. “He has made baseless allegations against me, claiming that I have someone else, but that is not true. I have been faithful in my marriage,” she added.
Human rights activist Kimutai Kirui, known for his work addressing issues of femicide, condemned the growing trend of women being killed or threatened by their spouses. He called for a stronger response from the police, emphasizing that any threats to women should not be taken lightly. “We are seeing an alarming rise in femicide, where women are killed or threatened. We demand that the police investigate all reports seriously, and that anyone found guilty should be held accountable,” Kirui said. “In Eldoret alone, we have already recorded four such cases, and we call on investigating officers to act swiftly to protect women.”
Uasin Gishu County Police Commander, Benjamin Mwanthi, acknowledged that there have been several cases of women reporting threats from their husbands and vice versa. “We are handling the case referred to us by the lady, and it is being investigated by the DCI Kesses,” Mwanthi said. “We urge couples to resolve their disputes peacefully, through dialogue and mediation with family members, and not resort to violence. If you are being threatened, report it to the police, and we will take stern action against the perpetrators.”
The woman has now called on the authorities to not only ensure her safety but also to return her children to her custody. She believes that the police, especially with the involvement of her husband’s position, could be key in securing her family and safeguarding her future.
The case remains under investigation, as the community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that prioritizes the safety and well-being of the woman and her children.
