President Ruto Appoints Ahmed Issack Hassan as IPOA Board Chairperson
President William Ruto has appointed Ahmed Issack Hassan as the new chairperson of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) Board. Hassan, a seasoned advocate with over three decades of experience in legal and public service across multiple countries, takes up the role as the government continues to prioritize police reforms and accountability.
Hassan brings a wealth of experience to the position, having served in various leadership roles both in Kenya and internationally. He is notably the first chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and previously led the Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC). His extensive career also includes roles in Somalia, South Sudan, Namibia, and Afghanistan, where he contributed to governance, rule of law, and electoral management.
A graduate of the University of Nairobi with a Bachelor of Law (LLB), Hassan also holds an LLB from the Kenya School of Law, alongside additional qualifications in public administration management. His appointment comes at a crucial time for IPOA, which plays a key role in overseeing police conduct and ensuring accountability within law enforcement agencies. IPOA is tasked with monitoring police operations, investigating allegations of police misconduct, and ensuring the protection of human rights in police interactions.
The appointment of Hassan is part of a comprehensive selection process that also saw other nominees take their seats on the IPOA board. As chairperson, Hassan will be responsible for managing the authority’s critical functions, including ensuring the effectiveness of its investigations into police abuses and the promotion of greater transparency within the police force.
Hassan’s appointment is expected to further strengthen IPOA’s mandate in fostering public trust and accountability within the police service as part of broader efforts to enhance the integrity of law enforcement in Kenya.
