Teachers Play a Crucial Role in Shaping Lives, Says Kenya Women Teachers Association CEO
In a recent statement, Benter Opande, the Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Women Teachers Association (KWTA), highlighted the significant and evolving role that teachers play in shaping the lives of students and society at large. According to Opande, teachers are not only educators but also mentors, counselors, and role models, with a profound impact on their students’ academic and personal development.
Opande emphasized that while teaching is traditionally seen as the core function of educators, today’s teachers go far beyond the classroom. “The role of a teacher in education goes beyond simply delivering knowledge. In today’s world, teaching has many faces. Teachers must be external parents, counselors, and mentors, guiding students both academically and personally,” she said.
One of the key responsibilities of teachers, Opande pointed out, is imparting knowledge. This fundamental duty lays the foundation for all other roles a teacher takes on. “A teacher’s primary duty is to ensure that students understand what is being taught. If a teacher fails in this role, it becomes difficult to exert any other form of influence on the child,” Opande explained.
But the influence of teachers extends far beyond the classroom. Teachers often become role models to their students, helping shape their character and attitudes. “Teachers may not always see themselves as role models, but the amount of time spent with students means they inevitably have a significant impact on their lives. A teacher’s influence can be either positive or negative, and it is up to the teacher to ensure it is the former,” said Opande.
Moreover, teachers frequently assume the role of “external parents.” Given the amount of time spent together, teachers often become a second family to students, offering guidance, support, and advice. This relationship helps students navigate their personal challenges and encourages them to strive for success. Opande noted, “Teachers are mentors who inspire and help set students on the right path. They are often a source of encouragement and wisdom, helping students unlock their potential.”
In a world where the role of education is continually evolving, Opande pointed out that the teacher’s responsibilities have expanded significantly. In addition to teaching academic subjects, teachers today also provide emotional support, counsel students through personal struggles, and encourage them to apply what they learn in real-world situations.
“Teachers are no longer just instructors; they are nurturers, guides, and motivators. They are the ones who inspire students to dream big and push the limits of their potential. It is their dedication that helps shape the leaders and innovators of tomorrow,” Opande concluded.
As the role of educators continues to evolve, the importance of teachers in society has never been more evident. They are integral in preparing students to become not just academically successful, but also responsible, compassionate, and impactful members of society.
