Teachers Play an Expanding Role in Shaping Future Generations, Says K.W.T.A. CEO Benter Opande

Benter Opande, the Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Women Teachers Association (K.W.T.A.), recently highlighted the transformative role teachers now play in shaping students beyond traditional classroom instruction. Speaking to a gathering of educators and stakeholders, Opande emphasized that the role of a teacher in today’s education system goes far beyond simply imparting knowledge.

“Teachers are not just instructors; they are mentors, counselors, role models, and, in many cases, external parents to their students,” Opande remarked. “The impact a teacher has on a child’s life can be profound, influencing not just their academic success but also their character and personal development.”

Opande pointed out that while teaching is still the core responsibility of educators, their roles have evolved. In today’s world, teachers must adapt to a multifaceted role that includes counseling, mentorship, and social guidance. This shift, she noted, comes at a time when students face complex challenges both in and outside of the classroom. Teachers are increasingly seen as figures of stability and inspiration, helping students navigate these challenges while imparting essential life skills.

**Sharing Knowledge**
According to Opande, the primary duty of a teacher remains to impart knowledge. “A teacher’s effectiveness in the classroom is foundational,” she said. “It’s through this that all other aspects of their role take shape.” Whether it’s following a prescribed curriculum or adapting to the unique needs of students, teachers continue to be the gateway through which young minds acquire critical skills and understanding.

**Role Models and Mentors**
In addition to their educational duties, teachers are often seen as role models. “Students spend significant time with their teachers, and this relationship inevitably shapes their perceptions and attitudes,” Opande explained. “Whether intentional or not, teachers have the power to influence their students’ values, behavior, and future aspirations.”

Teachers today are tasked with molding students not just academically, but socially and emotionally. As mentors, they help guide students through personal growth, decision-making, and setting future goals.

**An External Parent**
In a society where many children spend as much time in school as they do at home, teachers frequently take on the role of an “external parent.” This expanded role allows teachers to support students in their emotional and personal development. “Teachers are often the first to notice when something is wrong or when a student is struggling,” Opande noted. “They are there to provide encouragement, advice, and guidance, helping students become the best versions of themselves.”

**Teachers’ Impact Beyond the Classroom**
As the world continues to change, so does the role of the teacher. Opande stressed that today’s educators are no longer confined to teaching a set curriculum. They must also prepare students for the challenges of the real world by imparting skills for critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and practical problem-solving.

“Teachers change lives,” Opande said, “They inspire dreams and help students unlock their potential. They prepare the leaders of tomorrow, not just academically, but as well-rounded, responsible individuals capable of making meaningful contributions to society.”

Opande concluded by calling for continued support and recognition of teachers as essential pillars of society. “The future of our country depends on the quality of education, and the quality of education is deeply rooted in the commitment and capability of our teachers,” she stated.
