Governor Bii Opens the 97th Kenya Music and Cultural Festival
Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii today presided over the grand opening of the 97th Kenya Music and Cultural Festival, emphasizing the importance of embracing the county’s cultural heritage amid its rapid urbanization.
The event, held at the county’s main stadium, was attended by hundreds of residents, dignitaries, and cultural enthusiasts. This year’s theme, *”Our Culture, Our Wealth,”* underscores the county’s commitment to preserving and celebrating its rich traditions as it experiences rapid growth and modernization. Governor Bii praised the cultural diversity and energy of the people of Uasin Gishu, noting that it is the vibrancy of its communities that fuels the county’s ongoing development.
“With over 50 teams participating this year, the festival is not just a showcase of talent but a celebration of our unity, creativity, and the strength drawn from our cultural foundations,” said Governor Bii in his speech. “As we move towards urbanization, it is vital that we continue to uphold the values, traditions, and customs that have long defined us. Our culture is indeed our wealth, and it is through such events that we preserve and share this wealth for generations to come.”
The festival, which is one of the longest-running in Kenya, will feature performances in music, dance, and drama, with participants from schools, community groups, and cultural organizations from across the county. Over the next few days, attendees will experience a variety of performances that highlight the diverse ethnic groups and customs that make up the cultural fabric of Uasin Gishu County.
Governor Bii further encouraged the youth of Uasin Gishu to engage in the arts as a means of expressing their heritage and fostering unity in a rapidly changing world. He also commended the festival’s role in promoting local tourism, enhancing community cohesion, and providing a platform for young artists to showcase their talents.
The Kenya Music and Cultural Festival is set to run throughout the week, with various performances and competitions scheduled. The event is expected to attract visitors from across the country, strengthening the county’s reputation as a hub for culture, creativity, and growth.
As Uasin Gishu continues to urbanize, the Governor’s message remains clear: celebrating and preserving the cultural wealth of the county is integral to its identity and future prosperity.
