A Man Suspected to Have Sprayed 10 Acre of Piece Land with Roundup Denies Charges

A cereal farmer and his employee who were accused of spraying a 3.5 acre piece of land under maize crops valued at more than Sh 0.7 million belonging to an Eldoret based businessman with plant killing
chemicals have denied the charge.

The farmer, Wilson Kibet and Silas Kipyego appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Rosemary Onkoba where they denied spraying the maize crop with herbicides.

They were charged that on May 5, 2023 at Kimisto farm in Soy Sub County, Uasin Gishu County, willfully and unlawfully jointly destroyed the maize crop belonging to Joseph Keter by spraying it with herbicide
valued at Sh 760,650.

The accused persons were represented by Lawyer Tecla Tum while lawyer Boaz Bulbul is representing the complainant in the matter.

The court heard that the duo stormed into the maize farm and sprayed the cultivated crop with the chemical leading to its destruction following the ownership of the prime piece land.

The disputed property is located just less than 10 kilometres from Eldoret town’s central business district.

The state counsel through Sidi Kireng has lined up seven prosecution witnesses who will testify against the accused persons when the hearing of the case date will be given on July 17 before Senior
Resident Magistrate Barnabas Kiptoo.

They include the complainant and a police officer who investigated the destruction of the maize incident at the disputed farm.

The magistrate released the accused persons on a sh 50,000 bond each with surety of a similar amount.

The matter will be mentioned on July 17.
