AMREF Health Africa in collaboration with Neighbors in Action Kenya organized a training and sensitization program for peer monitors in Community Led Monitoring (CLM), an accountability mechanism that uses health data in decision making and service provision. The program is funded by Global Funds.

CLM is an accountability mechanism that uses independent structure and planned processes designed to and led by trained members of the community to systematically and routinely analyze qualitative data thus enhancing the community’s accountability between the service providers and the decision makers.

The training’s primary goal is to create a positive impact, find the gaps and bridge them thus improving the health services facilities in Uasin Gishu County.

Winnie Jelagat, a Project Officer in Neighbors Action Kenya said Community Led Monitoring also aimed to address and find ways of solving the challenges in the health facilities through the digital platforms like using the I monitor.

“My appreciation to AMREF Health Africa through Global Funds for facilitating this training of Community Led Monitoring (CLM). We have met with the Civil Society Organization (CSOs) network of Uasin Gishu in enhancing the CLM training. Through this training, we have learnt more on our health structures and we have realized the gaps present in our health systems. We have trained on the I-monitor and we are still building the capacity” noted Winnie.

Winnie further said, the training also aimed at addressing human rights issues and how to advocate for them alongside creating awareness for the rights and responsibilities of patients.

“Through this training, we have learnt on how to advocate for human rights at the same time being aware of your rights as a patient and your responsibilities too. We are already looking at how we have not been able to achieve for not doing the right advocacy and so through this training we have learnt on how to do the right advocacy. Though CLM, we will know what issues to advocate for and how to advocate for them thus improving our health systems.”
Benedine Kipruto, the chairperson for Civil Society Organization (CSO) said, the CSO entity exists to amplify the voice of the voiceless in the community by addressing various thematic areas of concern.

“We have various thematic areas which includes health, human rights, legal aid, peace building and governance, special interest groups including the youths, people living with disabilities, environmental and climate change.

Our training specifically focused on health courtesy of AMREF in partnership with Neighbors in Action Kenya. We have gone through a three days capacity building training. CLM aims to monitor and evaluate initiatives at the grass root level and also encourage citizens to come out and present their problems, suggest possible solutions and make reports through I-Monitor application”

Members of the public advised to actively get involved by keying in information through the I-monitor as theirfirst-hand feedback will enhance good strategy in health services provision.
