BUSIA LAUNCHES COVID-19 VACCINATION IN RENEWED BID TO CURB ITS SPREAD
The County Government of Busia in collaboration with the National Government has launched the Covid-19 vaccination campaign to boost the uptake of vaccines in a bid to strengthen the fight against the disease.
The event which was held at Adungosi market in Teso South Sub County was presided over by the Chief Officer in the Department of Health and Sanitation, Jonathan Ino and the County Commissioner, Dr Ahmed Omar who was represented by the Teso South Deputy County Commissioner Isaac Keter.
Ino reiterated the need for residents to ensure that they join hands with the government in managing Covid-19 by taking advantage of the exercise to get the jab in designated health facilities across the County.
“Based on the vaccination status in Busia County the number of those who have been vaccinated is not encouraging. For us to achieve hard immunity we should come out and get vaccinated in order to suppress the disease.
.
Those who have received the 1st and 2nd Jab should also go for the booster,”
Ino said, adding that parents should ensure that the routine immunization for children is observed for purposes of protecting them.
The Chief Officer further encouraged expectant mothers to attend antenatal clinics for consistent check-ups and medical attention.
Keter asked residents to ignore the myths and misconceptions being propagated about the Covid-19 vaccine, stressing that the vaccines are effective against preventing severe Covid-19 disease and death.
“The vaccines do not cause infertility as it is being spread. No Government will bring something that will affect the lives of locals.
Although all the vaccines are coming from outside the country, we have experts who have confirmed that it is safe,” he said.
He added : “Those who have not been vaccinated should ensure that they are inoculated and also inform others who have not received the jab to come out and get the vaccine. We should not lose lives as it was witnessed when the disease was first reported in the country in March 2020.”
The County Expanded Programme on Immunization Logistician Juliet Kilima said that 244,525 (51%) people received the 1st dose, 87598 (32.8%) (2nd dose) and 5485 (Booster).
