Can Deputy Governors Be Impeached

Recently there has been differences between County bosses with their deputies some leading to their impeachment.

This toxic relationship between the two leads to forfeiting of their manifestos and leading to underdevelopment of the county.

In Siaya County Deputy Governor William Oduol was impeached by MCAs on the grounds of gross misconduct and breach of the constitution.

The matter, which was tabled in the County Assembly Chambers by Member of County Assembly East Asembo ward Mr. Gordon Onguru, was supported by 38 MCAs who approved the Impeachment.

The speaker of the County Assembly later formed a committee, which will probe the issues presented to them by the public and give their findings to the assembly after 10 days.
In The impeachment procedure bill, Pursuant to Article 181 (1) of the Constitution, which gives powers to MCAs states that: a member of a county assembly may, supported by at least a third of all the members of the county assembly, move a motion for the removal of a Governor or Deputy Governor.
In Kenya, this has been the first case where a deputy governor is facing impeachment.
Political wrangles are already agitating in counties alleged by sidestepping of deputy governors by their bosses
It is thought that the governors see their deputies as a competitors rather than partners, which makes them to be sidelined.
According to Article 179 of the constitution, the roles of deputy governors are stipulated to be the Principal assistant to the governor and should deputies to the latter.

On the other hand, Deputy Governor stated that the differences between him and his boss are purely ideological.
Public spats in the counties of Kericho, Siaya and a dis quit in Meru and Baringo speaks to the fact that there are differences between the two executives.

In less than a year there have been two impeachment cases, Meru governor who was impeached and later the governor could be reinstated after the senate intervention and now the deputy governor Siaya county facing the same.
