In a bid to ease mounting tensions across Kenya, Bishop Ole Sapit, the Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Kenya, has called on young Kenyans, who have taken to the streets in recent protests, to cease their demonstrations and grant the government time to address their grievances.

Addressing the media at All Saints Cathedral, Bishop Sapit acknowledged the legitimacy of the youth’s constitutional right to protest but emphasized the importance of maintaining national peace and stability. He urged the protesters to be patient and allow the government the opportunity to act on the demands made during the recent demonstrations.

“While we support the Gen Z’s right to voice their concerns, we appeal to them to give the government time to implement the changes they are demanding,” Bishop Sapit said.

The Archbishop highlighted that the government has already shown some willingness to address the issues raised by the protests. Notable actions include the dropping of the Finance Bill, the signing of the IEBC Bill into law, and the dismissal of certain cabinet members. These steps, according to Sapit, reflect the government’s goodwill in responding to the youth’s concerns.

Bishop Sapit also condemned the violence that has accompanied the protests, particularly the attacks on media personnel. He called on both the protesters and the government to uphold the rule of law and to avoid further violence that could lead to more suffering for the Kenyan people.

“We urge both the protesters and the government to uphold the rule of law and manage the situation in a professional manner to prevent further harm,” Sapit stated, emphasizing the need for police to ensure the safety of demonstrators while managing protests effectively.

The Archbishop concluded by appealing to Kenyans to refrain from looting and property destruction, stressing that such actions should not be repeated in the future.
