Coffee growing program begins in Elgeyo Marakwet
As promised during H.E Governor Wisley Rotich’s campaigns, his administration has today commenced the journey to make the County’s escarpment a coffee growing area.
The County Government held a coffee fair with farmers, cooperative societies, partners, marketers and agronomists to chat a new beginning for the sector that will eventually create massive wealth to our community.
The resolutions made today included:
1.Each farmer to grow coffee in a minimum of half an acre land in all our 8 wards.
2.Each ward to establish a coffee nursery with the support of partners to ensure ready seedlings for the next season.
3.All partners dealing with enviromental restoration in the escarpment will be advised to provide coffee seedlings.
4.Coffee field days will be conducted in the 8 coffee growing wards to sensitise farmers.
5.Registration of all new and existing farmers to commence immediately to help us establish number of seedlings required.
6.Immediate registration of Elgeyo Marakwet Coffee Union as a body of farmers to help protect farmers and jointly market our coffee.
7.Formation of an implementation committee comprising of all stakeholders to ensure full realisation of this dream.
The Governor announced that the County Government shall soon be distributing existing seedlings to the farmers.
“I urge all residents especially our youth to join us in this journey of transformation,” he said.
