Cohesion Committee to Your Special Schools in Western , Rift Valley and Central Regions
The National Cohesion and Equal Opportunities Committee plans to visit selected public special schools in Western, Nyanza, Rift Valley and Central regions beginning next month.
Chairperson, Hon. Yussuf Haji said his team will use the session to undertake inspection of the schools and evaluate the level of their compliance in supporting students with special needs to achieve their right to education.
“Members will also be assessing measures put in place by the institutions to eliminate all forms of discrimination,” he explained.
Speaking during the Committee meeting, the Chairperson noted that members will be divided into three groups to be able to undertake the inspection exercise.
Committee’s – vice chairperson Hon. Liza Chelule said the decision by the House team to visit the institutions of learning was long overdue, noting that the state of some of the schools was wanting.
“It is a fact that many schools for special needs are struggling to comply with the requirement in the law for such less fortunate children,” said the Nakuru County MP.
Kaspul MP, Hon. Ong’ondo Were said that the visit will give the Committee fast hand information on the state of the schools and compliance.
“Most schools have not complied because they are ill equipped and understaffed,” said Hon Eng. Nzengu Paul Musyimi.
Nominated MP, Hon. Joseph Iraya Wainaina said the planned visits were timely as it will enable Members to come face to face with the reality on the suffering of learners in Special schools.
The same sentiments were echoed by Hon. Oku Kaunya (Teso North) who said learners in such schools have the right to quality education.
The Committee conducted a similar inspection visit of schools in the Coast region recently.
