Committee on Administration and Internal Security Undertakes a Security Situation Assessment in Baringo County
A delegation of the Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security today kicked off a fact-finding tour of Baringo County to assess the security situation. Led by the Committee’s Vice Chairperson, Hon. Rasso Dido, the legislators kicked off the visit with meeting at the Kasiela Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) Camp in Baringo South Constituency.
The Committee, accompanied by the County’s Regional Security team led by the Baringo County Commander engaged the security personnel stationed at the RDU camp on the successes achieved and challenges faced since the inception of the operation to contain the rising insecurity in the region.
According to reports before the Committee, 101 people have so far lost their lives, with 73 severely injured during the attacks that also resulted in loss of property, livestock, and homes.
Despite reports of improved safety due to the beefed up security, the RSC and residents appealed to the Committee to intervene in their requests to have more National Police Reservists deployed to help guard the lives and property of the people of Baringo.
The lawmakers also visited Arabal Primary and Secondary Schools, and Kapindasum Primary School, where a spot check of the students’ boarding situation revealed a dire need for intervention and improvement. Despite resumption of studies in these schools, the students have to convert their classrooms to dormitories at night, which they share with their teachers and parents.
As a part of its situational assessment, the Committee also visited the Arabal General Duty Operation Camp and Arabal GSU Camp. Thereafter, accompanied by the Baringo County Senator Sen William Cheptumo and the Woman Representative Hon Florence Jematiah, the MPs held two public Barazas at Chemongorian and Kiserian. Here, they engaged the members of the public on the security situation in Baringo, and also received written memoranda from the community leaders expressing their prayers to the National Assembly.
Among the issues raised before the Committee for intervention include:compensation and resettlement of displaced persons and accountability for the whereabouts of the banditry gangs- implying that their retreat could be a strategic move aimed at misleading the security operation.
The community further urged the legislators to institute an affirmative action towards the employment of educated youth, facilitation of an expanded road network and Communication channel and to cause the Initiation of a full disarmament program, as what’s happening now seems incomplete and they cannot account for the arms . They also sought the Committee’s intervention for the deployment of the Kenya Defence Forces in the current operations.
