COTU SG Francis Atwoli Demands Government Action on Aviation Workers’ Protest

In the wake of recent protests by aviation workers against the controversial Adan-JKIA leasing deal, Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has urged the government to address the workers’ grievances. Atwoli’s call comes amid reports of arrests of protesting workers, sparking widespread unrest in Kenya’s aviation sector.

Atwoli criticized the government for failing to consult workers on the deal and for the cabinet’s lack of responsiveness. “These issues would have been resolved earlier if our ministers were not so arrogant. They ignore workers’ calls while only responding to politicians,” Atwoli said, describing the ministers’ behavior as perilous.

The COTU leader expressed full support for the protesting workers and demanded their immediate release. “We call for the immediate release of all workers who have been arrested today,” Atwoli asserted.

The protests, driven by dissatisfaction with the Adan-JKIA leasing agreement, have led to significant disruptions. Kenya Airways has reported delays in passenger departures, and solidarity protests have occurred at Kisumu International Airport and Moi International Airport in Mombasa.

The situation remains tense as both workers and government officials navigate the ongoing dispute.
