County distributes 50,000 seedlings
County Government of Elgeyo Marakwet has taken a significant step towards boosting economic prosperity and increasing forest cover in the region by distributing 50,000 seedlings in three Wards.
The seedlings which comprised 20,000 tree tomatoes and cypress (30,000), were distributed to farmers in Kabiemit Ward in Keiyo South Sub County, Lelan Ward in Marakwet West and Kapyego Ward in Marakwet East Sub-County.
Environment, Water and Climate Change CEC Jason Lagat said the move was aimed at achieving Governor Wisley Rotich’s plans to empower local residents through his Kilimo Biashara program which aims at increasing household earnings.
“His Excellency Governor Wisley Rotich wants every household to have a crop that will earn them some money. His plans to tackle poverty is live and this is one of his approaches,” he said.
Residents thanked the governor for the seedlings terming the distribution exercise timely since in concided with the current rains pounding several parts of the county.
“The arrival of the seedlings is welcome. The timing is perfect, ” said Peter Biwott, a farmer from Lelan.
Isaac Koech, who is the Chief Officer in the department assured residents from other wards of similar programs in the coming days.
“Today Kabiemit, Kapyego and Lelan had their day. In the next few days, we will be distributing fruit and tree seedlings accross the remaining Wards. No one will be left behind, ” he said.
MCAs Priscilla Kurgat from Lelan and his Kapyego Ward counterpart Joseph Chebet lauded the governor for the initiative. “This is so encouraging. I like how our governor is reaching out partners for the seedlings, ” said Hon. Chebet.
Also present was CO Agriculture Edwin Komen, Director incharge of environment Charles Suter and other County Staff.
