County Government of Uasin Gishu Holds 1st Kenya National Avocado Conference

The County Government of Uasin Gishu on Wednesday hosted the 1st Kenya National Avocado Conference at Parachichi Centre in Tembelio Ward, Moiben Sub-County to enhance linkages and collaboration with stakeholders in the Avocado value chain and provide an opportunity for them to connect and discuss the key issues affecting the industry.

Speaking during the conference, Principal Secretary for Livestock and Fisheries Harry Kimtai, who was representing Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Prof. Mithika Linthuri, said that they are working with the County in ensuring that farmers get a subsidy for the produce and also access the market further noting that president Dr William Ruto signed an MOU with South Africa to provide market and this will see farmers benefit from more international markets.

Uasin Gishu Deputy Governor, Eng John Barorot, noted that Uasin Gishu is ideal for avocado and has since invested in production, having rolled out the diversification program in 2014.

“As a County, we are champions in the production of high-value crops, a move in which we have been able to assist farmers access quality seedlings, build farmers’ capacity and link them to markets,” said Eng. Barorot.

The Deputy Governor also said that they are opening up market linkages and exports through the Eldoret International Airport.

Uasin Gishu county has distributed 172,333 seedlings of avocado approximating 851ha with the mature area estimated to be 350ha and production of 7000 tonnes valued at 490 million.

Agriculture CECM Edward Sawe challenged the stakeholders to venture into value addition of the produce.
