Trans Nzoia County today received medical equipment worth Kshs 30,256,754 donated by USAID AMPATH Uzima.
The equipment is expected to improve primary healthcare services and accelerate the attainment of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in the county.
In his speech after receiving the equipment at the Kijana Wamalwa Teaching and Referral Hospital, Governor Natembeya noted that the donation comes at a critical time when the county is working to improve maternal and newborn health outcomes.
He said the County will greatly benefit from the receipt of the consignment, by scaling up equipment availability in Maternities and Newborn Units, including the County Referral Hospital, and selected Hubs and Spokes; bringing health services closer to the people, strengthening Primary Health Care as a key towards achieving Universal Health Coverage, and Sustainable Development Goal Three.
He said the equipment will help to improve skilled delivery rates, which are currently below the national average of 80%.
“With the equipment received today, we commence a journey to the safety and well-being of our mothers and newborns as we improve our health indicators on maternal and infant mortality,” he said.
The Governor also thanked USAID AMPATH Uzima for its ongoing support to the county’s health sector. He said that the partnership between the county and USAID AMPATH Uzima is an example of how international cooperation can help to improve the lives of people in developing countries.
“This equipment is not just instruments and apparatus; they represent a lifeline for our people,” he said. “They are a testament to the goodwill and support extended by partners like USAID AMPATH Uzima, who understand the importance of strengthening healthcare systems at the grassroots level.”
The Governor said that the partnership with USAID AMPATH Uzima is helping to improve the health of the people of Trans Nzoia County. He called on the county’s healthcare workers to use the donated equipment wisely and to maintain it properly.
“Let us treasure these resources and ensure their longevity by handling them with care and utilizing them to their fullest potential. Together, let us forge ahead, empowered by the spirit of cooperation and innovation, towards a reality where the right to quality healthcare for all is not an elusive mirage but a tangible experience of life where the need may arise.”
He added that the county government has already set aside sh 90 Million towards completion of the Kijana Wamalwa Teaching and Referral Hospital.
On his part, Prof. Sylvester Kimaiyo, Chief of Party, AMPATH noted that the contribution was made possible through the support of the American people via the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
“We are delighted to make this donation to Trans Nzoia County in support of its efforts to improve maternal, newborn, and child health outcomes. This equipment and technology will help to strengthen the quality of care provided to mothers and their babies, and contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goal Three, which calls for ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages.” ” said Prof. Kimaiyo.
The donation encompasses vital medical equipment such as Neonatal Incubators, Operating Theatre Lights, Operating Theatre Tables, Autoclave Machines, Blood Refrigerators, Handheld Fetal Doppler Machines, among others, and Medical Technologies including assorted Training Models and Non-Pneumatic Antishock Garments.
He said that the initiative aims to improve service delivery, reduce maternal complications, and expedite emergency obstetric and newborn care.
Furthermore, the donation will enable facilities to provide 24-hour maternity services and skilled deliveries, augmenting access to quality care and mitigating unnecessary referrals.
The collaborative effort between the Department of Health (CDoH) and the USAID AMPATH Uzima program aligns with the county’s vision of ensuring every pregnant woman and newborn receives high-quality care throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period.
