County Upscalling All Services at the Eldoret Retail Market
Uasin Gishu County Government has initiated a process of upscaling all services at the Eldoret Retail Market to make the popular market more friendly to customers and Traders.
This comes a few days after skirmishes erupted at the market eventually affecting the whole town.
On Saturday, five County Executive Committee Members including CECM Finance Micah Rogony led a team of senior officers to follow up on the ongoing clean-up exercise initiated by Deputy Governor Engineer John Barorot.
CECM Roads, Transport and Public Works Engineer Joseph Lagat said some of the arising concerns during their tour included issues of security, and illegal dump sites attracting street families where they breed and execute criminal activities around the town.
He said they will continue with the clean-up exercise, open up roads, install street lights, and open all the passages, drainages, and install additional lighting to make it more conducive for traders.
“The street families have converted some of the open spaces into places where they use to relieve themselves, thereby causing health hazards for the people around here and those who consume water of the nearby river Sosiani downstream because all the waste wash down to the river,” noted CECM Lagat
CECM Health Services Dr Sammy Kotut said that they will reinforce what was agreed in terms of cleanliness, hygiene, and sanitation, and they shall build new toilets where they are not enough so that the population of the traders and the customers are facilitated with the services.
The Public Service Management Devolution and Administration, CECM, Elijah Koskei reiterated that normalcy had returned and they had a meeting with law enforcers and that they shall ensure that security is tightened in Eldoret as it becomes a city so that investors have confidence.
On his part, CECM Lands, Urban Development, Physical Planning and Housing, Antony Sitienei, urged landlords who have left their structures incomplete for a long time around the market to finish the construction works in time to weed out criminals who use them as makeshift homes.
