Today, Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, HE Hon. Ali Hassan Joho, joined PS Mining Elijah Mwangi and members of the Parliamentary Committee on Environment, Mining, and Forestry on a fact-finding mission to the Kambe Ribe area in Rabai. This visit comes in response to escalating community complaints regarding exploitation by a local mining company.

During the tour, community members expressed grave concerns about land alienation without proper compensation, severe environmental pollution, and the use of heavy explosives during mining operations. Residents reported that the vibrations from blasting not only damaged their homes but also led to an influx of snakes into residential areas.

CS Joho acknowledged the community’s candidness, describing their grievances as serious and warranting immediate action. He emphasized that no investor would be permitted to exploit local mining communities without adhering to the law. “The Mining Act, Cap 306, mandates strict compliance with license terms. Any violations can lead to the cancellation or revocation of licenses,” he stated.

The CS highlighted the responsibilities of mining firms towards both the environment and local communities, asserting that the benefits of mining operations should primarily accrue to the residents. Under the Mining Act, communities are entitled to 10 percent of mining royalties and an additional 1 percent of gross sales.

Joho stressed the importance of environmental protection, stating that mining firms must engage in restoration and rehabilitation efforts as part of their operational commitments. He ordered a comprehensive audit to assess the extent of damage to local homes, with findings expected by Tuesday next week. This report will guide any further actions against the implicated company.

The State Department for Mining reaffirmed its commitment to promoting mineral investments that are beneficial to local communities while upholding the highest environmental standards. The CS concluded that all investors must respect community rights and foster positive relationships with residents to ensure shared prosperity from mineral exploitation.
