CS Water Takes Over Maji House
Cabinet Secretary Zacharia Njeru today formally assumed office as CS Ministry of Water Sanitation after a handover from his predecessor Hon Alice Wahome who now moves to take over at the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing & Urban Development after the recent Cabinet reshuffle.
During the ceremony today at Maji House boardroom, witnessed by Principal Secretaries in the Ministry Mr. Julius Korir State Department of Water and Sanitation and his state Department of Irrigation counterpart Mr. Ephantus Kimotho, the outgoing CS Hon Wahome said she was leaving the Ministry at a time when the national Water coverage stood at 71 % while Sanitation was at 32 %. She noted that Irrigation component in the Ministry needed to be taken seriously if the country was to meet it food security demand.
Hon Wahome expressed gratitude to H.E., the president for appointing her to serve as Cabinet Secretary Water Sanitation and Irrigation and more lately the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing &Urban Development following the recent reassignments that took place on 4th October 2023. She said it was indeed humbling and a great honor for an opportunity to serve at these two dockets after joining the Cabinet and Kenya Kwanza Government.
In his remarks, the Incoming Cabinet Secretary Mr. Zacharia Njeru took the opportunity to thank H.E the president for giving him an opportunity to serve in the Ministry of Water Sanitation and Irrigation adding that he will serve diligently just like he did in his former Ministry.
He praised the outgoing CS for her stellar performance in the Ministry. “I will build on what my Cabinet Secretary colleague Hon. Alice Wahome has been doing. I congratulate Hon Wahome for key achievements within a very short period of time. I will work to improve the governance in the sector, continue with the reforms and also implement projects so that Kenyans can get water and sanitation services and also increase food security.” He said.
To provide live, dignity and food security to the people of Kenya, CS Njeru urged the staff to embrace teamwork with him so as to achieve the mandate of the Ministry. “We should work harmoniously and cohesively …..to deliver the Government Agenda. The two State Departments shall work together. Whole Government Approach should begin with this sector “The CS emphasized.
CS Njeru said he would be seen most of his time in the field providing services to the people of Kenya to actualize Bottom-Up Transformation Agenda (BeTA) spearheaded by H.E because provision of these essential services to Kenyans are weighty and urgent issues that our nation must focus on, if we are to attain all-inclusive and transformative development.
He promised to work closely with the county governments since Water and Sanitation Services are devolved functions and called upon everyone to observe a coordinated approach to all issues communicated to the general public.
The CS called on Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry’s Agencies to speedily implement projects and programmes in their fortes adding that he will soon meet them to communicate his agenda to them.
The handover ceremony was attended by Water Secretary Eng SAO Alima, Secretaries of Administration Mr. Stehpen Kihara (Water and Sanitation), Mr. David Yatich Kipkemei (Irrigation) and Heads of Departments in the Ministry.
