Deputy President Gachagua Claims Assassination Attempts Amidst Impeachment Controversy
In a dramatic revelation, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has alleged that there have been two assassination attempts against him, suggesting a broader political conspiracy linked to his recent impeachment. Speaking outside Karen Hospital, Gachagua expressed his fears, stating, “I don’t feel safe,” and recounted troubling incidents that he believes were orchestrated to eliminate him.
Gachagua’s first claim involves an alleged incident in Kisumu, where he contends that undercover agents infiltrated his hotel room, tampered with his food, and bugged the premises. “We figured it out and got away,” he stated, emphasizing the serious nature of the threats he faces. The second alleged attempt occurred in Nyeri, where he claims agents from the National Intelligence Service tried to poison him.
He suggested that these assassination attempts are connected to the recent political moves against him, stating, “When the poison plots didn’t work, that’s when they went for impeachment.” His remarks insinuate a coordinated effort to undermine his position and safety.
The impeachment process concluded with the Senate finding Gachagua guilty on five out of eleven charges, including corruption and undermining the authority of government. This historic decision marks Gachagua as the first sitting deputy president in Kenya to be impeached under the revised 2010 constitution.
Despite his removal, Gachagua has vowed to appeal the impeachment, labeling the allegations as politically motivated and unfounded. He is also taking legal steps to prevent the appointment of a successor until his case is resolved in court.
In a striking accusation, Gachagua criticized President William Ruto for what he described as heartlessness and betrayal, revealing that his security has been withdrawn since his impeachment. He issued a warning that if anything were to happen to him or his family, the president would bear responsibility for the threats against him.
The unfolding situation raises significant questions about political stability and security within the Kenyan government, as Gachagua’s claims add layers of tension to an already tumultuous political landscape.
