DG Cheserek Leads Planting of 20,000 Exotic and Indigenous trees
Under the continuing Regreening of Schools Program, Deputy Governor Prof Grace Cheserek today led learning institutions in Kapcherop, Cherangany hills in planting trees.
A mix of over 20,000 exotic and indigenous trees were planted. The community were also given 2,500 seedlings of TNC avocado.
The School Regreening program editions started by His Excellency Governor Wisley Rotich aims to restore degraded landscapes and promote environmental awareness among young people in the region.
Speaking during the event, Prof Cheserek said the program is designed to empower local communities to take ownership of their natural resources and promote sustainable land use practices.
“The Regreening schools program in Kapcherop is a positive step towards restoring the natural ecosystems of the Cherangany Hills and promoting sustainable development in this region,” said Prof Cheserek.
Through partnerships with schools, community groups, and government agencies, the program is helping to build a culture of environmental stewardship and conservation in the region, she added.
Mary Keitany, marathon record holder who was also in the event encouraged the residents to embrace the initiative as the region is home to several endemic plant and animal species, as well as important water catchment areas that support local communities, the neighboring counties and the agricultural sector.
Cherangany hills is an area known for its unique ecosystems and biodiversity.
Also present were Chief Officers, area Ward administrators, Kenya water towers, Kefri, Iten_Eldoret Water Fund officials among other stakeholders.
